Project Feature: PULSAR by Patrick Ethen

#DLECTRICITY presents “PULSAR” by Patrick Ethen, a hand-wired LED abstract light installation characterized as an oscillating, pulsing, rhythmic star simulation. Pulsars are naturally occurring, rapidly spinning, highly magnetized compact stars that emit beams of radiation out of their magnetic poles – the leftover remains of a star core after a supernova.

It is a large-scale, immersive, cosmic representation of idealized space technology, creating a hypnotizing atmosphere that pulls in the observer with its own gravity!

This project will be located outside the Scarab Club on September 24th and 25th. Read more about this project and others by clicking the “ARTWORKS” tab!

DLECTRICITY is less than 2 weeks away!

#DLECTRICITY is less than two weeks away! Here’s a look back at #DLECTRICITY2017. We hope you’ll join us for two exciting nights of art, light and technology on September 24th and 25th. #DLECTRICITY will take place in Detroit’s Cultural Center and DTE’s Beacon Park, and is free fun for all ages. See you there!

Enter a Virtual Polygon World with View Tracing #3

#DLECTRICITY presents “View Tracing #3” by Takayuki Mori, an installation of fluorescent threads and ultraviolet light stretched over spaces and objects. After dark, only the threads fluoresce, and the mass and weight are removed from the space and transformed into a VIRTUAL POLYGON WORLD.

Viewers enter into the vague space to be transformed, and experience a transitional space between 2D and 3D! Artist Takayuki Mori hopes this work will give viewers a chance to take a fresh look at the materials and spaces around us, and our relationship with them.

This project will be located in the alcove underneath Prentis Hall on the Wayne State University campus on September 24th and 25th. Read more about this project and others by clicking the “ARTWORKS” tab!

ARTIST FEATURE: Farah Al Qasimi

#DLECTRICITY is excited to exhibit “General Behavior” by Farah Al Qasimi, a 7-minute video composed of errant sheep, Gulfie YouTube eclectica, road scenes, family lore, toys and games, the artist’s famous love for Jell-O, as well as Al Qasimi’s face superimposed on a twirling shawarma stick — among other things.

Named after the title of a set of children’s Islamic morality stickers, “General Behavior’ is a punning characterization of the contents of the video — snatches of life drawn from the artist’s archive that are held together by Al Qasimi’s editing and, occasionally, her own voice. These scraps, sensuous, humorous, and beguiling, offer up a Proustian sound and smell and sight bath.

This video will be projected outside State Hall on Wayne State University’s campus on September 24th and 25th. Read more about this project and others by clicking the “ARTWORKS” tab!

Come see the Eye of Detroit!

#DLECTRICITY presents “Eye of Detroit” by Studio Erin Taylor, an interactive light sculpture that is activated by festival participants. A large eye-shaped projection screen is illuminated by a color changing projector. It serves as a platform for children, adults, and the occasional canine to do an unlimited variety of shadow poses, dances, and other forms of self-expression. This project will be located on the Woodward/Warren corner near the University of Michigan Rackham Building on September 24th and 25th. You can read more about this project and others at #DLECTRICITY by clicking the “ARTWORKS” tab!

Project Feature: All the Light We Cannot See

#DLECTRICITY presents “All the Light We Cannot See” by Abhishek Narula, a responsive light installation that visualizes an invisible ambient phenomenon.
Setup in the trees on the lawn of the Detroit Institute of Arts, this installation is comprised of hundreds of LEDs lining the branches that glow, shimmer, and pulsate response to the ambient signals of smart phones, Bluetooth and Wi-fi devices in the vicinity.
Just as trees rely on visible light for photosynthesis and survival, this installation relies on the invisible waves given off by mobile devices for generating a vibrant light show. Read about this project and more happening September 24th and 25th by clicking the “ARTWORKS” tab!

Project Feature: POOF!

#DLECTRICITY is excited to present POOF! by Bradley Scherzer, a giant, inflatable, glowing geodesic dome creature that relies on its bright and colorful good looks to get people to “feed” it.

Powered by air, the system hurls soft, lightweight materials (“poofs”) through transparent tubes in a blur of colors, and participants move in and out of the “creature” feeding in new poofs. The tubes weave, loop, and cross, making it a surprise where these neon foods will come out next.

POOF! will be located in DTE Energy‘s Beacon Park and is perfect for kids and families. See POOF! and other exciting projects coming to #DLECTRICITY September 24th and 25th by clicking the “ARTWORKS” tab.

ARTIST FEATURE: STEPHANIE DINKINS

#DLECTRICITY is excited to present “On Love & Data and Holding Space” by Stephanie Dinkins, a visual transmedia artist who highlights the intersection of artificial intelligence and race, gender, aging, the the future in her work. The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design is partnered with #DLECTRICITY to showcase “On Love & Data,” a visual poem and glimpse into an Afro-now-ist world.
This projection is part of an ongoing instillation at the Stamps School of Art & Design Gallery that runs until October 23rd. You can see this video projected at #DLECTRICITY on Woodward Ave side of the Rackham Educational Memorial Building on September 24th and 25th. Click the “ARTWORKS” tab to learn more about this exciting project and others!

Tiff Massey Gets Big at DLECTRICITY

#DLECTRICITY presents “Get Big” by Tiff Massey, an interactive installation that stimulates a music video in real-time, combining elements of design, technology, and hip-hop. For “Get Big,” Massey makes an immersive music video featuring her jewelry sculptural artworks. Viewers will be invited to walk into the space and once the participant walks in, the beat drops, the music starts, the cameras are activated, and the viewer becomes the artwork. This project will be on the Cass Avenue lawn of the Detroit Public Library on September 24th and 25th!
