QLINE TO OFFER SPECIAL SERVICE FOR DLECTRICITY

Streetcars to Run Friday and Saturday 6 p.m. to Midnight Prior to Return to Regular Service Monday, September 27

QLINE will offer special service for DLECTRICITY prior to its regular service relaunch on Monday, September 27.

“We are excited to kick off the return of the QLINE in partnership with DLECTRICITY,” said M-1 RAIL President Lisa Nuszkowski. “As regular activity continues returning to the Woodward Corridor, we are focused on connecting riders to all there is to experience along the QLINE.”

The two-day outdoor nighttime arts and technology festival along the Woodward Corridor will take place Friday and Saturday, September 24-25 from 7 p.m. to midnight. QLINE service will begin at 6 p.m. both evenings. For more information about DLECTRICITY and a schedule of events, visit dlectricity.com.

Following the special event hours Friday and Saturday evening, QLINE will return to regular service on Monday, September 27, operating free for passengers for the remainder of the year.

At relaunch, hours will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday – Thursday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. As employers return to offices from COVID-19 and regular activity increases along the route, QLINE will assess demand and adjust hours accordingly.

QLINE’s goal of service every 15 minutes or less at restart was made possible by improvements made during the service pause. A transit-only section of the route was installed southbound from Temple to the I-75 service drive, ensuring smooth passage of the QLINE during special events. Additional operators, new technology in the streetcars, and the ability to remove obstructions more expeditiously will ensure riders can depend on QLINE.

“This is the start of a new chapter for the QLINE,” said M-1 RAIL CEO Matt Cullen. “We appreciate the patience of our riders during the service pause and we’re excited to help the Woodward Corridor emerge from the pandemic.”

About DLECTRICITY

DLECTRICITY, inspired by Nuit Blanche arts festivals from around the world, has presented three major light-based art + technology festivals in 2012, 2014 and 2017. Produced by Midtown Detroit, Inc. (MDI), the spectacular outdoor visual light + art celebration takes place in Detroit’s Cultural Center and  DTE’s Beacon Park. Attendees are immersed in a landscape of light through groundbreaking installations of video art, new media, lasers, interactive design and engineering, and captivating performance. DLECTRICITY is presented by DTE Energy Foundation.

Project Feature: Electronic Music Ensembles!

#DLECTRICITY presents “Electronic Music Ensembles” by Joo Won Park, a combination of sound installation and ensemble performance featuring both human and non-human performers. There will be an ongoing installation for eight networked computers creating generative audiovisuals throughout the evenings of September 24th and 25th.

The Electronic Music Ensemble of Wayne State (EMEWS) will also perform original compositions written for electronic instruments. With guidance from EMEWS members, the audience will learn to play electronic music and make music with the machine/human ensemble.

Project Feature: The Interactive Magic Mirror

#DLECTRICITY presents “The Interactive Magic Mirror” by 42 Levels, an interactive live VFX art piece that maps people’s movement and synchronizes it to music. The effects are designed to ‘dance’ to the music so the glows, size, speed and more of each effect react to the beat.

Step in front of the camera, wave your arms, do a dance, spin around and jump to build your own unique visual masterpiece! This project will be projected outside Wayne State University’s Walter P. Reuther Library on September 24th and 25th at DLECTRICITY!

Project Feature: Magic Lantern, Live

#DLECTRICITY presents “Magic Lantern, Live” by Won Ju Lim, a live shadow play installation and performance that creates a cultural impact for audience members by pointing to a time when we, as visual beings, experienced the magic of moving image for the first time.

Unlike a traditional shadow play in which the moving components are props and puppets, the moving components in “Magic Lantern, Live” will be the lights. The audience will be able to freely navigate between behind the screen, where the performance will take place and in front of the screen, where the effects of the actions (the shadows, reflections, refractions) will create a magical world. Performances will be happening both September 24th and 25th at DLECTRICITY!

Project Feature: every day

#DLECTRICITY presents “every day” by Joana Stillwell, an illuminated poem that reads, “every day, we are slowly, approaching, a solstice.” The artwork brings attention to the changing subtleties of seasonal light. Each line parallels the colors of the sky during twilight.

With every step, the viewer seeks the end of the poem, becoming more aware of the movement of the earth and our relationship to time. This project will be on Kirby St. between Cass Ave. and Woodward Ave. on September 24th and 25th at DLECTRICITY!

Project Feature: Time to Celebrate!

#DLECTRICITY presents “Time to Celebrate” by Ralph Taylor, a pop-up parade and skit performed with 30 participants dressed in beautifully designed costumes dancing to the rhythm of Caribbean persuasions.

There will be two 45-minute performances happening both September 24th and 25th–each performance will open with a poem of reflection and end with a celebration of LIFE, all happening at DTE’s Beacon Park.

DLECTRICITY is a part of Detroit Month of Design!

#DLECTRICITY is honored to be a part of Month of Design, Detroit’s annual month-long celebration of arts and culture. Programmed by Design Core, Detroit Month of Design is a citywide celebration of creativity that gathers designers and the greater community to celebrate Detroit’s role as a UNESCO City of Design.

Detroit Month of Design and DLECTRICITY present “YayaLand Takeover” by Yazmin Dababneh, an immersive experience that transforms the entire College for Creative Studies Ford Campus beginning at sundown. Running from September 1-30, this vibrant installation utilizes the existing lighting by creating a colorful and euphoric atmosphere, ultimately transcending and allowing the public to explore the space at their own will and leisure.

Thank you Marc Schwartz!

#DLECTRICITY would like to thank Marc Schwartz for sponsoring this year’s festival! As our Curatorial Committee Chair, Marc Schwartz has been an important contributor to the planning and programming of DLECTRICITY. For years he has also been a thoughtful patron for arts in the city of Detroit. It’s individuals like Marc Schwartz that are instrumental in putting Detroit on the map as a hub of arts and culture!

Featured is “Project Dali” by Tom Harmon of Lasernet, an interactive installation where lasers are manipulated by spectators in order to create “living art” where intersecting beams represent how our individual paths can cross as we journey through life. This project will be in DTE Energy’s Beacon Park.

Thank you Lisa Applebaum

DLECTRICITY would like to thank Lisa Applebaum for her support of Allison Janae Hamilton’s installation, “Waters of a Lower Register,” an immersive 5-channel film installation that will be located in front of the University of Michigan’s Rackham Building on Farnsworth Street. “Waters of a Lower Register” was originally presented by Creative Time in Brooklyn Bridge Park in December 2020 and will now be in Detroit due to Lisa Applebaum. You can read more about Allison Jane Hamilton’s installation here.

DLECTRICITY is scheduled for September 24-25th, from 7PM-midnight each day in Detroit’s Cultural Center and DTE’s Beacon Park.
