Artist Information

In 1869, French poet Chales Baudillaire observed a rapidly changing Paris. As medieval streets quickly gave way to broad boulevards, the poet’s impulse was to look within before looking without. “Windows” (“Les Fenêtres”), a prose poem that champions the subjective imagination, reminds us that we are always in the process of looking. We are left with our own imaginations to invent new worlds, to feel alive, and “to feel the very nature of the creatures that we are.”

Pato y Pato’s Windows is a light and sound installation that pays homage to the spirit of Baudillaire’s revolutionary poem. Performed live and without the aid of computers, the project features live instrumental music alongside ever-evolving visuals, dreamscapes that pique the imagination and illuminate the imagined spaces beyond the screen.

Like the speaker of Baudrillard’s poem, we wander the City of Detroit, witness to its ever-changing landscape, and we wonder: Where am I in all of this? Windows encourages a response. Beyond the glass, beneath the concrete, there is another world. Given what we see in front of us, we look through the window and ask What else is possible?

Pato y Pato

Pato y Pato is an experimental music and art duo based in the North End of Detroit, MI. Composers John Duffy and Mark Maynard create work informed by some of electronic music’s earliest pioneers and fuse their music with avant-garde visualizations to produce events that are immersive, immediate, and utterly unforgettable. The result, according to Chicago’s 5 Mag, “has an air of spontaneity and a sometimes unearthly sound that is, nevertheless, comprehensively human.” Their newest release, Green and Gold, will be available November, 2021 on vinyl and streaming.

Assisting with this performance is visual artist Jeffrey Evergreen whose current work involves constructing parametric systems that use feedback and modularity to generate or process images and sounds in real time, often responding to external inputs or sensors.
