Still Life is a collection of short, nonverbal shadow puppetry vignettes, suitable for audiences of all ages. This performance introduces a wide range of characters (human and otherwise), each of whom struggles, in one comical way or another, to make their way forward in a world which is bent on reversing their desires and confounding their expectations. Emphasizing the shadow theater’s capacity to generate wit, surprise, and visual irony, Still Life proposes—lightheartedly—that life is never truly at rest.

Matt Sandbank's Shadow Factory
Matt Sandbank is a nationally-touring shadow artist based in Austin, TX. By animating jointed figures against an illuminated screen, Matt creates stories that are sometimes rollicking, sometimes quietly absurd, and always freshly imaginative. His work has been featured at the Puppeteers of America National Festival in Minneapolis, MN (2019), the Children’s International Puppetry Festival in San Antonio, TX (2017, 2016, 2015), the Lake Eden Arts Festival in Black Mountain, NC (2017), and the Nashville International Puppetry Festival in Nashville, TN (2013).
