2012 Exhibition

Public Constructions is a mini public park and seating area set among a dozen giant glowing flowers. Everything in the park is built with materials normally used for traffic control and construction safety. Objects that are used to block and obstruct are repurposed to create an open and inviting space for people to sit, relax, and engage with each other, and their city, in a fun way. By playing with the material vernacular of construction safety and traffic control objects, the night park aims to cast new light and perspectives on alternative uses of public space.

Growing among the hammocks and benches of the park are a dozen giant glowing flowers. Unlike organic flowers, these flowers have petals made from amber safety lights, stems from electrical piping, leaves from orange construction netting, and roots that are concrete. Embedded with LEDs and custom electronics, each flower can flash their own unique pattern or blink in sync with each other, lighting up the night with a warm amber glow that will attract people to the park much like organic flowers attract bees.
