Jake Chidester and Alisyn Malek / Corktown Studios

Founded by Jake Chidester and Alisyn Malek in 2011, Corktown Studios is an artist collective located in Detroit’s North Corktown Neighborhood providing affordable studios for its members as well as exhibition space for area artists and the community.

Corktown Studios serves as the platform and banner for founders’ Jake and Alisyn’s creative exhibitions, which have included curation and creation of interactive public artwork for Detroit Design Festival, Noel Night, Dlectricity, DIFFA, Daly in the Ally, Detroit Drunken Historical Society, Art X, Movement, and multiple other Detroit music festivals.

Jake is a Detroit-based architectural designer, artist, and educator (‘A pretty good designer and builder of things’). His work is rooted in a conversation between architectural gestures and painterly space, and the realm of contradictions and possibilities resultant. Complemented by interactivity, hacked electronics, and a sensitivity towards constructivism, his body of work aims to provoke human-scale tactility while being compatible with the urban-scale context.

Alisyn is an electronics tinkerer, mixed media artist, and globe traveler. Her mixed media is occasionally playful, usually social commentary, and sometimes just for the color- her work has evolved to explore tension in content and white space, forcing you to approach and take time to inspect it before comprehending the content. In installation work she leverages her engineering background working on electronics integration into interactive sculptures. She also works to help get other artists work out there through our efforts at Corktown Studios and explores musical space as a saxophone player with Botanical Fortress.
