DLECTRICITY is Detroit’s nighttime festival of art + light that featured over 35 world-renowned and emerging artists whose cutting-edge works of art illuminated Midtown Detroit in 2014, from the Detroit Institute of Arts down to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. This two-night “Nuit Blanche” festival was scheduled for Friday, September 26 and Saturday, September 27 in Midtown Detroit from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. Saturday night also featured the DLECTRICITY Light Bike Parade where thousands of cyclists biked a 4-mile route through Midtown Detroit, adding extra light and energy to the streets. Weekend programming also included artist talks and performances. DLECTRICITY is produced by Midtown Detroit, Inc. and is free to the public.
The 2014 DLECTRICITY Light Bike Parade attracted a diverse group of people who joined together to participate in a mesmerizing array of flowing lights as the bicyclists traveled along the 4 mile parade route. Over 3,000 cyclists participated–four times more than the activity’s first year. Many participants arrived with their bikes pre-decorated while some took advantage of the free light kits and creatively adorning their bikes before the parade. The three levels of riders–Quick, Moderate + Family Riders–assured that everyone was able to participate. The parade was more than just a bike ride through the streets of Midtown–it was a chance to enjoy the amazing light installations and to be an active part of the festival. The 2014 Parade once again illuminated the streets with even more light, color + energy drawing event attendees to the streets to cheer as the brilliantly decorated bicycles passed by.
